How the 49ers win the NFC West

The 49ers still control their fate in the NFC West, with multiple paths to the division crown. The simplest scenario is also the most powerful: if San Francisco defeats the Bears and then beats the Seahawks in Week 18, the Niners would lock up the NFC West and secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Winning out removes all doubt and eliminates the need for outside help, putting Kyle Shanahan’s team in position to dominate the playoff picture heading into January.

There are also contingency routes if San Francisco stumbles in Week 17. A loss to the Bears wouldn’t be fatal if both the Seahawks and Rams also lose that week, as a Week 18 win over Seattle would still hand the division to the 49ers. Another scenario keeps the door open even if the Rams win in Week 17: the Niners would still need to beat the Seahawks in Week 18 and get help from the Cardinals, who would have to knock off the Rams. While several combinations are in play, the most straightforward path remains obvious — win the final two games and leave nothing to chance.

Can the 49ers Make the Playoffs?

Yes, the 49ers can make the playoffs, and they have already qualified after their Week 16 win. With their championship pedigree and deep roster, San Francisco looks positioned for another postseason appearance and potentially to make a run to the Super Bowl.

49ers Playoff Picture (2025-26)

San Francisco’s playoff picture is bright, with a proven coach, strong quarterback play, multiple offensive playmakers, and a dominant defense. The 49ers have balance on both sides of the ball, and oddsmakers expect them to strongly contend for a division title.

Still, they must maintain their health, hoping to avoid catastrophic injuries like last season, and carry momentum in one of the league’s tougher divisions.

Where Are the 49ers in the NFC West Divisional Race?

The 49ers are currently in second after their recent game. The odds reflect that as well, as the Niners are +215 to win the division. That puts them behind the Seahawks (+100) and ahead if the Rams (+330).

Latest News on 49ers Super Bowl Odds

I track the latest news impacting the 49ers' chances to make the playoffs in the bulleted list below.

  • Running back Christian McCaffrey looked explosive and fully healthy through OTAs, and has helped the Niners tremendously over the first two weeks.
  • Rookie defensive end Mykel Williams showed up at OTAs with high energy and edge rush instincts, adding instant depth and playmaking upside. He is out for the season after tearing his ACL.
  • The 49ers re-signed veteran DT Kevin Givens, which kept their interior run defense reliable and experienced.
  • San Francisco re-signed starting quarterback Brock Purdy, linebacker Fred Warner, and George Kittle to new contracts, solidifying a very solid core.
  • Brandon Aiyuk is working toward a Week  14 return after his ACL/MCL surgery, but the 49ers will not rush him back and will rely heavily on second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings. Kittle, of course, will be in the mix.
  • Eddy Pineiro is the sole kicker on the team after the Niners released Jake Moody.
  • Fred Warner and Nick Bosa are both out for the season, meaning the Niners need the rest of their defense to step up.

Key Contributors Toward 49ers Postseason Odds

In the 2025-26 season, these are the most impactful contributors on the 49ers' roster.

  • QB Brock Purdy: Purdy's continued health is vital — as long as he stays on the field, he can lead a balanced, high-powered offense. His poise under pressure makes him the cornerstone of San Francisco’s playoff hopes. Purdy hopes to make it back by Week 9.
  • RB Christian McCaffrey: McCaffrey remains the team's offensive Swiss Army knife, whether as a running back or a receiver. His versatility makes him nearly impossible to game plan for and gives the 49ers flexibility on every down.
  • DE Nick Bosa: Bosa is the defensive heartbeat. He sets the tone and makes it easier for teammates to thrive. The former All-Pro is one of the best in the game and recently suffered a torn ACL, so the Niners will need to replace him.
  • MLB Fred Warner: Warner is among the best linebackers in the NFL. Unfortunately, he suffered a dislocated, broken ankle and is out for the season.
  • TE George Kittle: Kittle remains one of the best tight ends in the NFL, and led all players at his position with a 13.3% catch rate over expected, leading the Niners with 78 receptions for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. Kittle is back in the lineup.
  • WR Brandon Aiyuk: Aiyuk’s return from injury gives the receiving corps a game-changing threat along with Ricky Pearsall. His ability to create separation and make contested catches will be instrumental for Purdy and the 49ers' offense. The timetable is still unknown, but he could return by the end of the season.
  • WR Jauan Jennings: Jennings is dealing with a calf injury, but looks to be an essential part of this offense as the 2025 season draws closer.
  • OT Trent Williams: Williams is likely nearing the end of his career, but is still one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL. It's critical that he stay healthy to give the Niners the best chance to move the ball fluidly.
