Canada Trails U.S. in Sports Betting Participation as Public Concern Grows

Canada sports betting remains less popular than in the U.S., as a 2025 Leger study highlights participation gaps and rising public concern.

The report shows fewer Canadians are placing wagers through Canada sportsbooks compared to U.S. bettors, while concerns about advertising volume and media partnerships are increasing in both countries.

Participation Gap Between Canada and the U.S.

The Leger study found that 19% of Canadian adults reported placing a sports bet within the past 12 months. That figure is down from 21% in 2024, showing a year-over-year decline in Canada sports betting activity.

In comparison, about 26% of American adults reported betting on sports during the same time period. While the U.S. participation rate remains higher, the study also reported a 13% decline in betting activity year over year among American respondents.

Despite the overall drop, the survey indicated that a core group of Canadian bettors continues to use Canada sports betting apps and plans to maintain or increase wagering activity as major professional sports seasons move forward.

Rising Concerns Around Advertising and Industry Practices

Public sentiment around sports betting advertising and industry partnerships also shifted in the Fall 2025 study.

Advertising Volume

Approximately 75% of Canadian respondents said there are too many sports betting advertisements, up from 72% in 2024. In the United States, 59% of respondents reported the same concern, increasing from 52% the previous year.

Media Partnerships

More than 51% of Canadians said sports broadcasters and digital platforms should not partner directly with betting operators. Among American respondents, 30% shared that view.

Match Integrity

Concerns about game integrity were also reported in both countries. Nearly 50% of Canadian respondents said they were concerned about match-fixing, while 42% of Americans reported similar concerns related to match integrity.
