After spending the first nine years and 536 NHL games a member of the Calgary Flames’ blue line, change could be in the air for Swedish defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The 28-year-old defenceman is an unrestricted free agent for the first time next summer, perhaps making an impact on Calgary Flames playoff chances for 2025-26. With that in mind, BetCanada.com broke down the odds on where Andersson will play next season.
Team | Odds | Percent Chance |
Montreal Canadiens | +700 | 12.5% |
Buffalo Sabres | +900 | 10.0% |
New York Rangers | +900 | 10.0% |
Carolina Hurricanes | +1000 | 9.1% |
Dallas Stars | +1000 | 9.1% |
Toronto Maple Leafs | +1250 | 7.4% |
The Field | +900 | 10.0% |
Stay With Calgary Flames | +200 | 33.3% |

Rasmus Andersson arrived in Calgary as a second-round pick (No. 53 overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has been with the organization ever since. He has one more year on his current contract.
The top landing spot for Andersson’s services this offseason, should he leave the Flames, is with one of Canada’s most esteemed franchises. The Montreal Canadiens hold +700 odds of landing the ninth-year veteran from Malmo, thanks to having more than $6 million to spend on free agents.
These odds are exclusive to BetCanada.com as part of our coverage about NHL betting in Canada.
Throw in the Sabres and Rangers at +900 apiece and the Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars at +1000 apiece and you have the upper end of the Andersson odds board covered. The Flames hold +200 odds of keeping their long-time blueliner in town long term, making them the favorite.
Of the teams on our list, Carolina has the most free-agent cash to splash, ranking fourth leaguewide at $26.735 million, according to spotrac.com data. The Maple Leafs are sixth with $25.709 million in free agent space, meaning either team could go well beyond the $4.550 million per season that Andersson has earned since 2021. At least theoretically.
Fans of the great NHL Alberta rivalry, and those thinking of Calgary Flames betting futures for 2025-26, can take heart that the Flames are next on the list of teams with available cap space, at No. 7, with $25.17M. It’s also worth remembering that teams always have their own players to retain – including the Flames with Andersson – in addition to chasing potential unrestricted free agents. For instance, the Leafs must deal with UFA status for two star forwards, John Tavares and Mitch Marner, plus several other players. If Toronto keeps both Marner and Tavares, there is pretty much no chance that they could fit Andersson’s contract under the cap, which is $95.5 million USD for the 2025-26 season.
